An unmet need for accommodation and a neglected permanent site has left many Gypsy and Traveller people in Cardiff with inadequate facilities and places to live.

Through the work Gypsies and Traveller Wales have done in the area since 1981, they have identified key areas of need for Gypsies and Travellers temporarily and permanently living around Cardiff. They aim to address this gap in provision by employing a new dedicated support worker to support and advocate for the needs of Gypsies and Travellers in Cardiff. The part-time worker will work to improve the quality of life for those both permanently and temporarily living around Cardiff over three years.

They will work to identify the exact needs and hopes for these communities in the area. This will include working with residents and local Government to improve living conditions on the Rover Way permanent site which is currently overcrowded with no safe access on foot and in a flood risk area. Gypsies and Travellers Wales aim to work to improve the facilities on the site, build a play area for children, remove hazards, improve the appearance of the site, remove rubbish, debris and work to address fuel poverty.

In addition, Gypsies and Travellers Wales will work to improve access to health and education services as well as assessing the welfare of people living roadside. Working with local authorities and voluntary services, a partnership will be created to fill this gap in support and deliver the hopes and needs of the communities in the area.
